“The perfect family - wait Spanish school! - in Bogotá”
A few months ago I took a few weeks of classes at the Whee institute, and I still miss them often! Not only did my Spanish improve immensely at Whee, they also were one of the best parts of my months in Latin America. They are GREAT teachers, AMAZING caring friends, giving INNOVATIVE and effective classes and all of that.. CHEAPLY! what more could you want 🙂Instead of shoving you into standard classes, they ask you what you want to learn, assess your skills, and challenge you in everyday situations so that you can use your Spanish immediately. Most importantly though, they make the learning fun. This helps not only with the learning at that moment, but is showing all its benefits now when I continue to find joy in picking up a Spanish book or watching a Spanish movie - I am no longer frustrated when I can't understand everything but am now enjoying the challenge. During my stay at the institute I had the luck of having classes from all the teachers, and each of them has their own skills - they can find you one for whatever you want to improve and how you want to improve it!In addition, as described by the other reviews as well, the school feels like a community - a place you're hanging out with friends. When I was sick, or when other stuff happened - good or bad - the staff and teachers are right there for you. Thank you for everything and I hope to see you again in March!! 🙂
“There isn't a better place to learn Spanish!”
I spent 5 weeks at Whee in April/May 2016. I took daily classes and also did a homestay organized through Whee. I also had the chance to do a little work with Whee's parent foundation, Replicable.I can't recommend this place enough!Whee has great teachers and small classes (I was almost always the only student in my class). The teachers adapt their lessons daily to match your interests and goals. Everyone goes to lunch together, which is another great opportunity to practice Spanish. If you are thinking about learning Spanish in Bogota, choose Whee! I'd also recommend doing a homestay - I loved every minute of mine!
“Just one week to try to get to grips with Spanish....”
I wish it was possible to learn Spanish in a week ... but The Whee Institute is definitely the next best thing!I knew that travelling in Colombia with my two teenage boys (18 and 16) wasn't going to be easy, so when my eldest suggested he'd like to learn Spanish, I thought 'what a great idea - we can add a week onto the trip. After much research, I came across The Whee, which seemed to have a great approach to learning. I contacted them and was put at ease straight away. My youngest has just taken Spanish GCSE, so has a basic knowledge and it was suggested he go in a different group to my eldest son and I - the beginners. My youngest was skyped before we left London to assess his level and subsequent class. We weren't sure what to expect when we turned up at their new premises, but were made to feel very welcome. The teachers are amazing! My head was spinning the first few days, but then I realised I was picking up things people were saying and was reading signs and understanding them! My head still tries to find a word in French rather than Spanish (!) as I've spent many years since school attempting to perfect the subject, but, I now know enough Spanish to have a go - to direct taxi drivers, to read (and order from) a menu, to ask directions, how much, what is it, etc. I don't think that's too bad. Today was our last day :-(. We went out to a local market to test our skills. It was great fun. My youngest son had a trip out on his own - his own private teacher - who took him to an art gallery, which he loved.Julian, the beginner's teacher, was so patient. It was full on immersion from the start, but he clearly and precisely went over everything until we understood. The rest of the staff are lovely and go out of their way to ensure the learning experience is a good one. I had enquired about salsa lessons before our trip - Alejandra organised a fantastic salsa lesson for all the students of the school after lessons one evening!I couldn't recommend The Whee Institute more highly!
“The best place to learn Spanish!”
Whee institute gave me more than a memorable experience. They gave me the gift of a language filled with cultural exposure and friendships. This little school goes above and beyond as they give you in-class language learning (speaking, listening, writing) by matching your Spanish level. The class is taught in all Spanish with the teacher and approximately 1-3 other students. In this setting, you are immersed into the language with direct guidance from a teacher who is directly teaching you, not a large class. The teacher caters the class to your goals. If you want to speak more, there is more practice around that. Same with reading and writing! With this type of targeted instruction, quick growth is made!I highly recommend taking at least 2 weeks of class. The classes are 3 hours a day, set up according to your schedule (with high flexibility). At least twice a week, you are taking "class" outside of the normal classroom. In my experience we went to markets, libraries, small shops, the botanical garden, etc. You learn phrases and words in the classroom that you can then use on your field trips. You will end up speaking the language quickly with this type of training.I took class here for 4 weeks consecutively. I came in with 3 years of high school exposure back in 2007-2010 so you can imagine I was incredibly rusty. I did not understand more than the simple, "hola." At the end of my month, I was able to understand many conversations and even speak (slowly) statements and questions. I wish I would have stayed there longer. Into week 3, I noticed that I was picking up the language even more quickly.Another excellent quality of this school is the people. You will not meet kinder, more genuine people who want you to have the BEST experience possible while in Colombia. They take full interest in who you are as a person as they invite you out to lunch daily, evening drinks, dance classes, weekend activities, etc. Their investment in your experience will make you want to stay longer.Overall, this was one of the best experiences I have ever had. Be prepared to want to stay longer than you planned. If you do, you won't regret it 🙂Best of luck on your language endeavors!
